An Unpredictable Friendship

The Places You'll Go & The People You'll Meet

You never know who you're going to meet, or how meeting them will impact you...

Hannah, the girl in the picture above, is one of my best friends my college and was one my roommates my sophomore year.

When we first met, neither of us predicted we would be best friends.

We met during orientation weekend, the summer before our freshman year. I was sad that I was spending so much time out of town that summer and missing out on time I could be spending with my high school friends. This led my introverted self to not feel extraordinarily social... I was not looking to meet my future best friends that weekend.

Hannah, on the other hand, is the definition of an extroverted, social, friendly person. She walked up to me with big hair, big earrings, and a bright t-shirt to match her bright smile and introduced herself. (everything is actually bigger in Texas, I discovered.) We both walked away from that introduction thinking we would never be friends.

I thought, "Whoa. She is just too much for me."

She though, "Wow. She's sort of anti-social and kind of rude."

We both thought, "We'll never be friends."

Fast forward to Welcome Week in August: we were the only two people each other recognized.

When we were re-introducing ourselves during the meet and greet, another girl ran up to Hannah, yelling her name, arms open and hair flying. I watched as Hannah slowly backed up in confusion. It ended that they had actually never met, the girl had just seen her on Facebook and thought they had. Whoops. Facebook stalking gone awry. (We ended up being friends with that girl anyway. She was fun, and an adventure unto herself. She was even more extroverted, social, and friendly than Hannah.)

After that week, Hannah and my friendship was solidified- even with our different personalities. I think I spent more time in her dorm room than my own. We lived together, with two other amazing roommates, our sophomore year and stayed friends throughout life's adventures: studying abroad, living across the country, getting full time jobs (hallelujah!) and getting married.

I love the story of our friendship. It's the perfect example of the fact that you never know who you are going to meet, what their story is, and how meeting them will impact your life's story.

Humans of New York, one of my favorite websites, is another perfect example. (although I'll warn you... once you start browsing the website, you don't stop. You get totally sucked in. It's like a black hole.) Brandon Stanton takes people's pictures in New York and interviews them. He then posts their picture and a bit of their story to his Tumblr. Proving, yet again, that people's stories are powerful.

I think that's why I love blogging and reading other people's blogs. I believe in the power of stories.

I had know idea that Hannah would be apart of my story, but I'm so glad she is! Hopefully, though, next time I meet my future best friend, I'll be a little more friendly. :)

  1. That's so great that you have been able to keep in touch and keep a strong friendship! That's something that my own friends and I discuss often; we hope that we do not stop talking and seeing each other after graduation. I don't think we will!

    1. You definitely have to be more intentional about communication when you aren't living together... but you can do it! Roommate reunions are so much fun. And while it stinks to no longer be living in the same city, it's great knowing people who live all over!
