Fashion Week

What Story Do Your Clothes Tell?

It's New York's Fashion Week! And although I'm not in NY, I find myself regularly checking fashion blogs...

Why is that? Alli is the fashionista of the family, not me. Why do I love looking at fashion blogs so much? I think I love fashion because I love stories.

Fred Davis wrote of this in 1992 in his book- Fashion, Culture and Identity. And what he wrote then, holds true today. Even his opening thoughts made me smile and nod in agreement.

"That the clothes that we wear make a statement is itself a statement that in this age of heightened self-consciousness has virtually become a cliche. But what is the nature of the statement we make with our clothes, cosmetics, perfumes, and coiffures, not to mention the other material artifacts with which we surround ourselves? Are such statements analogous to those we make when we speak or write, when we talk to our fellow?... [Our clothes] makes clear reference to who we are and wish to be taken as while alternatively or simultaneously evoking an aura that "merely suggests more than it can (or intends to) state precisely?"

My takeaway from that is this: what we wear and how we wear it tells a story, both by statement and suggestion. Clothes and fashion, therefore, must not be dismissed as unimportant, or as the step-sister of art. Fashion is a part of the family of story telling and is a force to be reckoned  in the world of art.

I wonder what my outfits- a mix between flannel button downs with boots, and very high heels with dresses- say about me? What do your clothes say about you?

Jacey Duprie, the voice behind Damsel in Dior said it perfectly- "Using the way you dress to become who you want to be.

The piece of art above is by Donald "Drawbertson" Robertson- someone who very much understands the art of fashion. He is the head of Creative Development at Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and is also one of the original founders of MAC Cosmetics. He's kind of a big deal. Plus he can doodle on anything and make it look amazing. Vanity Fair did a piece on him today. Check it out here.

I am not such an artist. My doodling talent peaked in 8th grade. But I am intrigued by the world of art, and the world of fashion. Particularly this week.

Happy Fashion Week Brave Ones! Some of our favorite bloggers- the sisters from A Piece of Toast- are at fashion week right now. Perhaps I will break out of my uniform of flannels and wear something extra fancy this week in honor of New York. We'll see. It's snowing, so no promises.

Stay warm.

Much love,
