Boys are From Mars and Girls are From Venus

Why Are We Doing This?

Have any of you ever wondered about marriage? Beyond the beautiful wedding with flowers, music and charger plates, and beyond the blissful beach honeymoon, you have two very different people promising to spend the REST OF THEIR LIVES together under the same roof, in the same room, even in the same bed.

Now, do not misunderstand me. Jon is wonderful. He is my favorite person. He was wonderfully made. He makes me laugh, he comforts me when I don't feel well, and he gives me lots and lots of hugs. I love his sense of humor, his dance moves, and the way his brain works.

It works really different from mine.

To give you an idea of our differences, consider the fact that he studied math in college and I studied writing. He thinks linearly; I think abstractly. He is very logical; I am more emotional. He likes plans. My happiest days are the ones where I have no plans. No wonder they say boys are from Mars and girls are from Venus. We are so different!

And we are about to be living together.

Sometimes when I think about that, it blows my mind.

But, even when I consider are differences, (like our genders, for example) I don't worry.

I know we'll have some hard times, and I know we will have to learn how to translate our thoughts into a language that the other understands, but I'm excited about it.

Why?

Because marriage is something created by God, so it must be good.

In the book The Meaning of Marriage (a GREAT book for single people, soon to be married people, or already married people) Timothy Keller describes love and marriage like this:

“It is to look at another person and get a glimpse of the person God is creating, and to say, “I see who God is making you, and it excites me! I want to be part of that.  I want to partner with you and God in the journey you are taking to his throne.  And when we get there, I will look at your magnificence and say, ‘I always knew you could be like this.  I got a glimpse of it on earth, but now look at you!’  Each spouse should see the great thing that Jesus is doing in the life of their mate through the Word, the gospel.”

Isn't that awesome? In the midst of having dance parties in our kitchen, building forts in our bedroom, and playing cards all night long, (or until I win at least one game) Jon and I are about to have a chance to love each other and push each other closer towards God.

Less than 60 days until I marry my best friend. I'm really excited about it.

If you have any marriage advice that you'd be willing to share with the class, please leave a comment below! We are about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime and all words of wisdom (or humor) are appreciated!

Much love,

xo, The Attic

ps. That picture is one of our lovely engagement pictures, taken by Montag Photography. We thought taking engagement pictures would be awkward, (as we are not really model-like) but they made it so fun!
