Working it Out

Go For A Run... or Not.

What do you think the best work out is?

Do you enjoy running? What about cycling? (My dad LOVES to cycle. It's not my favorite... it does make you sweat, though!) Are you a swimmer? Do you play tennis? Again, not my favorite. I am so bad at it. The hand-eye coordination thing never happened for me. What about Crossfit? Or weight lifting?

Out of all of these workouts, which one is the best?

The answer is simple...

"The single best exercise there is, hands down, is the one you'll do." This quote is from Mark Sisson, the man behind the inspiring blog- Mark's Daily Apple

Each of those workouts will work your body different ways, and some might argue that one or the other works more of your muscles, or works your body more efficiently.

But running won't make you lean and fast unless you actually run. Swimming won't tone your muscles unless you actually swim. Weight lifting won't make you stronger unless you actually lift weights.

It seems obvious, but sometimes we need to be reminded of the obvious.

Different work outs fit different people. Find out what works for you, and do it! If you enjoy the workout, you'll be more likely to do it consistently. And consistency is necessary for a successful outcome. (eg. your health.)

This post was inspired by reading other fabulous bloggers' thoughts on working out. Grace from Graceful Living likes to bike and hike. (One her previous posts in particular was the inspiration behind this one... Thanks Grace!) Juli from PaleOMG likes to do Crossfit. Grace from Stripes & Sequins recently found a love for yoga, and has been trying lots of other workout classes since.

The Fisher sisters enjoy a variety of workouts: Lindsey enjoys Crossfit and running the most. Alli enjoys yoga and going to the gym with a friend. I, Lynn-Holly, enjoy all the above, but most of the time, my workouts consist of running and Crossfit. In my perfect workout world I would run 3x a week, do yoga 2-3x a week, and Crossfit 3-4x a week, and have one day off. (I know, that adds up to more than seven... there would be some overlap.)

This gorgeous trail pic is from my last run.
It's so much easier to go running outside now that the weather is nice!

Last week, The Huffington Post did an article about 19 Reasons to Get in Shape proving that regardless of what you fancy, fitness is important. It goes beyond how you look in jeans or swimsuit; it affects so many other areas of your life.

And luckily, it's the perfect time of year to get in shape. The weather is starting to warm up (kinda... unless you live in Michigan.) and the sun is shining! Time to go for a walk, do yoga in the park, take a dip in the pool, go for a run... or do something

Find the workout you actually enjoy and then go for it!

Much love,

  1. I definitely do more running than anything. I recently tried yoga and it totally kicked my butt, but it was so relaxing! I've never tried CrossFit but I have been hearing more and more about it lately.

    1. The first time I tried yoga it totally kicked my butt too! I had this idea that it would be mostly stretching and relaxing... ha. It was both of those things, but it was also super hard! My muscles had never worked that way before. I now have lots of respect for people who do yoga. I really like it... but I'm terrible at it!
